Knowing GeNose, a Tool to Detect Corona Virus

GeNose C19 is a tool specially made by experts from Gajah Mada University (UGM) to detect Corona virus infection through exhalation. In Indonesia, GeNose has obtained a distribution permit and a use permit from the Indonesian Ministry of He alth

The use of GeNose to detect COVID-19 disease through exhalation has been used as an alternative for he alth screening on various modes of public transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, how effective is the GeNose C19 test for detecting the Corona virus and how does it work?

How GeNose C19 Works

GeNose C19 is able to identify the Corona virus by detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are known to be formed due to Corona virus infection and come out with an exhalation.

Research shows that people with COVID-19 produce higher VOCs than people who don't get infected with the Corona virus.

In the GeNose test, the person being examined will be asked to exhale into a tube-shaped device, then the sensor in the tube will detect VOCs in the exhaled breath.

GeNose takes about 2−3 minutes to detect the presence or absence of VOCs that could indicate COVID-19. One unit of GeNose is estimated to be able to perform about 120 checks per day.

Benefits of Using GeNose C19

Here are some advantages of using GeNose C19:

  • The test results are fast and do not require reagents or other chemicals as in the rapid test
  • The cost of the Corona virus detection test using the GeNose C19 is relatively cheap, which is around Rp. 15,000–Rp. 25,000
  • Test sampling in the form of exhalation is considered much more comfortable than sampling with the swab method

Efficiency Test GeNose C19

GeNose C19 has passed a profiling test on 600 samples at Bhayangkara Hospital and Bambanglipuro COVID-19 Special Field Hospital, Yogyakarta, and showed an accuracy rate of up to 97%.

From the results of these trials, the GeNose C19 test is considered to be an alternative to detect Corona virus infection. Even so, more research is still needed to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of GeNose in detecting the Corona virus specifically.

Because the VOCs detected in the GeNose C19 test can also be found in the exhalation of people with other respiratory diseases, such as asthma, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Therefore, diagnosing COVID-19 is actually not enough to rely on the GeNose C19 test. Until now, the results of PCR tests and examinations from doctors are still the standard for diagnosing COVID-19, while other tests are only used for screening.

As a screening tool, GeNose C19 found by experts from UGM is expected to help detect asymptomatic COVID-19 sufferers, so that the spread of COVID-19 can be more controlled.

However, regardless of the results of the GeNose C19 test, everyone must continue to apply the he alth protocols to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

If you feel symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, runny nose, impaired smell (anosmia), and shortness of breath, or feel that you have contact with a person with COVID-19, immediately contact a he alth care facility or COVID-19 hotline to get a check.

If you still have questions regarding the GeNose C19 test or other examination methods to diagnose COVID-19, you can chat directly with the doctor on the ALODOKTER application. You can also make an appointment with a doctor at the hospital through the application.
