Knowing Avifavir for COVID-19

Avifavir is produced by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and the ChemRar Group of Russia. Since the beginning of June 2020, this drug has been supplied to all regions of Russia and 15 countries around the world. Indonesia became the first Asian country to register Avifavir.

The active ingredient of Avifavir is favipiravir, which is generally used to treat infections caused by several types of influenza viruses, such as influenza A, which causes avian and swine flu, influenza B, and influenza C.

Favipiravir works by inhibiting the polymerase enzyme, an enzyme that plays a role in RNA replication. Because the replication process is inhibited, the virus cannot reproduce and spread to other organs of the body.

Avifavir is the first Russian drug to be licensed for the treatment of COVID-19.The results of stage 2 and 3 clinical trials show that this drug can kill the Corona virus for approximately 4 days. This is much faster than regular treatment which can take up to 9 days.

The effectiveness of Avifavir for curing COVID-19 is quite high, which is more than 80%. In addition, the results of clinical trials also state that this drug is safe to be given to COVID-19 patients of all conditions and ages.

Although it is declared safe, BPOM only allows Avifavir to be used for COVID-19 patients with mild to moderate symptoms and at least 18 years of age. This medicine should also only be used as directed by a doctor and is not intended for pregnant women.

BPOM also asks the pharmaceutical industry responsible for the distribution of Avifavir to continue phase 3 clinical trials to ensure the effectiveness and safety of this drug.

Warning Before Taking Avifavir

Like drugs in general, favipiravir is not free from various risks and side effects. Based on various data that has been collected, favipiravir is known to be at risk of causing side effects in the form of decreased sperm quality and fetal defects.

Therefore, consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Breastfeeding mothers also need to consult their doctor before using this drug.

Women who are still of childbearing age are required to use contraception when having sex while undergoing treatment with favipiravir up to 7 days after taking this drug. Meanwhile, for men of childbearing age, it is necessary to use contraception for up to about 3 months while using favipiravir.

This aims to prevent pregnancies that are at risk of causing defects in the fetus due to side effects of the drug favipiravir.

The presence of Avifavir in Indonesia is one of the efforts to increase the success of COVID-19 treatment. In addition to giving Afivavir, COVID-19 patients may also be given several other types of COVID-19 drugs, according to their he alth conditions.
