Stomach acid or acid reflux disease is caused by weakening of the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus or also known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Normally, the LES muscle relaxes when eating so that food from the esophagus can enter the stomach. After the food descends to the stomach, this muscle will close so that the food cannot return to the esophagus.

When the LES muscle is weak, the esophagus will remain open and stomach acid will rise back up into the esophagus. As a result, heartburn appears immediately after eating, difficulty swallowing, and chest pain.

Causes of Stomach Acid Rise

Acid reflux can be influenced by various factors, both from outside and from within the body. In general, there are four factors that cause stomach acid to rise, namely:

1. Obesity

Obesity or being overweight is the most common cause of acid reflux. Fat that accumulates in the stomach can increase pressure on the stomach, thus pushing stomach acid back up into the esophagus.

2. Food and drink

Food or drink can also cause stomach acid to rise. Examples of foods that often cause stomach acid to rise are high-fat foods, such as fried foods. This type of food can trigger the release of the hormone cholecystokinin which can weaken the LES muscle.

Not only that, consuming acidic or spicy foods, chocolate, soft drinks, caffeine, and alcoholic beverages, is also considered to be a cause of stomach acid to rise.

3. Certain drugs

Consuming certain drugs in the long term, such as muscle relaxants, blood pressure lowering drugs, birth control pills, tricyclic antidepressants, can also increase the risk of acid reflux. These drugs can even worsen the symptoms of an existing acid reflux disease.

4. Hernia on hiatus

A hiatal hernia can also cause stomach acid to rise. This condition occurs when the diaphragm muscle that separates the abdominal and chest cavities does not work optimally, so that the upper part of the stomach can enter the chest cavity.

As a result, food and acid in the stomach can back up into the esophagus and cause heartburn.

In addition to the factors above, there are also several conditions that can cause stomach acid to rise, such as pregnancy and an unhe althy lifestyle, such as smoking, lying down immediately after eating, or snacking before bedtime.

Most of the causes of acid reflux can be de alt with by changing lifestyle and eating patterns, for example by losing weight or changing food choices and habits after eating.

However, if the symptoms of acid reflux are severe, recur frequently, and are accompanied by chest pain and shortness of breath, you should consult a doctor for proper examination and treatment.
