Many think that hymen surgery can make a woman a virgin again. Not a few are willing to spend up to tens of millions of rupiah for this operation. So, is it true that hymen surgery can restore virginity?
Hymn surgery is a plastic surgery procedure that aims to repair or reconstruct a torn hymen. In medical terms, this procedure is known as hymenorrhaphy or hymenoplasty.
The hymen or hymen is a thin membrane located in the middle of the vaginal canal and lines the vaginal opening. The shape of the hymen of each woman is generally different, as well as its elasticity and thickness.
When this membrane is torn, usually a woman will experience temporary bleeding and some pain in the vagina. A tear in the hymen is often considered a sign that a woman is no longer a virgin, although there are many things besides sexual intercourse that can cause the hymen to tear.
Who Should Have Hymen Surgery?
Women who want to restore the original structure of the hymen can undergo this surgery. The following are common reasons for women wanting to have hymen surgery:
- Getting virginity status and marks when married, usually for reasons of social demands and self and family honor
- Repairs hymen damaged by sexual assault or rape, thereby providing emotional and psychological relief for the victim
- Repair hymen damaged by injury
- Satisfy your partner by giving the sensation of bleeding during sex, like a virgin
Do you need hymen surgery to become a virgin again?
Whether or not someone needs to have hymen surgery depends on each individual, including the way of thinking about the existence of a hymen and its relation to virginity.
In some countries, including Indonesia, virginity is a symbol of the purity and morality of a woman. Virginity is often defined as a condition where the hymen is still intact when you first have sex. Women are considered not a virgin if they do not bleed from the vagina the first time they have sex.
Tearing of the hymen can indeed be caused by sexual intercourse that involves the penetration of the penis into the vagina. However, the integrity of the hymen can not be a measure of a woman's virginity. This is because the hymen can also be torn due to several other causes, such as:
- Sports, strenuous physical activity, or accidents, such as falling from a motor vehicle, while cycling, or riding a horse
- Use of tampons
- Masturbation using finger or sex toy
- gynecological examination using a special instrument (eg a speculum) that is inserted into the vagina
In some cases, the hymen is very elastic, so sexual penetration may not necessarily tear it. In fact, there are women who are born without a hymen. Thus, the absence of blood during sexual penetration for the first time does not mean that a woman is not a virgin.
Moreover, the definition of virginity is actually a woman who has not or has never had penetrative sexual intercourse or insertion of a penis into the vagina.
So, medically, hymen surgery cannot restore a woman's virginity. However, this procedure can help repair a woman's sex organs to look like they've never had sex.
How is the Hymen Surgery Procedure Performed?
Hymn surgery is performed by a surgeon by sewing back the remaining hymen that has been torn or damaged. Before the operation, the anesthesiologist will give you a local anesthetic. In certain situations, this procedure can also be performed under general anesthesia.
After the anesthetic has taken effect, the doctor will sew the inner and outer layers of the hymen to resemble the hymen at first. In this procedure, your doctor will usually use absorbable sutures, so you don't have to go back to the doctor to remove the stitches.
After undergoing surgery, the hymen will be cleaned with warm water and the suture line will be given an antibiotic ointment.
Hymenectomy is usually painless. However, if there is pain, the doctor will give painkillers. The doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent the risk of postoperative infection.
You need to know that hymen surgery also carries a risk of complications, including:
- Pain in intimate organs
- Scar appearance
- Deformity of the hymen
In addition to sewing the remaining torn hymen, hymen reconstruction surgery can also be performed using other methods, namely by placing an artificial hymen made of gelatin and filled with artificial blood.
Recovery time after hymen surgery ranges from 4–6 weeks. During the recovery time, you are advised not to have sex. Treatment that needs to be done generally only washes and gently cleans the vulva 4 times a day after each urination or defecation.
Until now, there hasn't been much research on the long-term side effects or complications of hymen surgery. Therefore, whatever your reason for doing this surgery, you should first consult with a plastic surgeon or obstetrician who is experienced in performing hymenoplasty procedures.
